Dubai is seeing a greater appetite for cosmetic surgery, with demand for procedures like liposuction and breast augmentation up 15 percent since February this year.
This comes not as a surprise since Dubai is an image-conscious city and Emiratis are becoming more conscious of their health. The UAE may be one of the world’s fattest countries but an increasing number of people are shedding weight and needing surgery to remove excess skin.
Body contouring is one of the newest cosmetic surgery trends in Dubai. Portuguese plastic surgeon Dr. Luiz Toledo says he has seen a growing number of patients seeking post weight loss body contouring. The increase is attributed to an ever growing awareness of diabetes, which affects 25 percent of the local people, and the ensuing drive to shed pounds.
Toledo says majority of his patients asking for contouring have been Emiratis, followed by GCC nationals. He also sees a greater percentage of male patients seeking this procedure than the international average, with men accounting for 20 percent of his UAE clients, compared to about 12 percent internationally.
Botox, the world’s most popular non surgical procedure, is also becoming more popular in Dubai as people learn more about it. According to Dr. Maurizio Viel, of the London Center for Aesthetic Surgery, Dubai branch, he is seeing great interest from European women living as expats in Dubai.
Camouflaging is also becoming more popular in the city. Candice Watson, a micropigmentation specialist offering alternative procedures for UAE residents, says she spends a lot of time helping patients camouflage surface-level skin problems like the effects of vitiligo (the depigmentation of sections of the skin) and scars, with the use of medical pigments. Watson says most of her patients are Emirati women and expats. This procedure is enjoying greater interest as people get ready for the summer season, she says.
