Melissa’s Law – Sending a message

melissa

Melissa Dohme was a 20-year-old college student and neonatal nursing assistant with her entire future ahead of her. But, that changed drastically on January 24, 2012 – when her ex-boyfriend bothered her incessantly, until she finally met him (to make him stop calling and texting all night long). Robert Lee Burton, Jr, 21, convinced her that he just wanted a hug. When she started to give him a hug, Burton launched into a murderous attack with his fists and two different knives that left Melissa with 32 stab wounds, a cracked skull, missing / loose teeth and in need of 12 pints of blood. A young couple, who bravely intervened against the 265 lb Burton, saved her life. Melissa, at her young age, should not have had to endure attempted murder. Nor should any of the women who are disfigured, daily, all over the world. Read about Melissa, Melissa’s Law and / or pledge to help victims of savage, disfiguring attacks, here. We are here for Melissa, and those who have shared similar fates…Together, we can send a message!

After a self-inflicted gun shot wound was sustained to the face during a suicide attempt in 1997, there was very little left to Richard Norris’ face. Over the years he had many surgeries, but more recently underwent the world’s most comprehensive face transplant during a 36 hour procedure performed at Maryland Shock Trauma Center to repair Mr. Norris’ neck, jaw, teeth, tongue, scalp and all tissues and muscles located in those areas.

Oscar win honors Reconstructive Surgeon Dr. Mohammed Jawad

Most people think of the annual Academy Awards as a time to look at pretty gowns and celebrate their favorite actors and actresses. But, it also seeks to raise social awareness by honoring documentary and foreign film makers. We are pleased to announce that the Documentary Short Subject Oscar went to a documentary about a reconstructive surgeon, and his work with acid burn victims.

‘Saving Face’ chronicles the work of renowned reconstructive surgeon Dr. Mohammed Jawad – who came to fame with his diligent and brilliant work on British acid burn victim Katie Piper. This documentary focuses on his work in Pakistan, where he helps women who are survivors of acid attacks, generally from their own families. ‘Saving Face’ debuted on HBO in the USA on March 8th, and be shown on Channel 4 in the UK in early April, after being screened as part of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival UK, on March 28th and 29th, 2012.
